  Alexis Didier Medium

1826-1886

Alexis Didier is a French mid nineteenth century Medium, who was very famous in his time.

Franz Anton Mesmer and the case of different theories with Alexis Didier is a particularly important case of conflict between the theories of Mesmer on animal magnetism and the medical institution of the nineteenth century. It was said indeed Alexis Didier the day of his funeral in 1886, he was "the greatest visionary of modern times."

In 1842 the Academy of Medicine decides not to investigate the somnambulistic phenomena. This decision puts an end to twenty years of debate. In 1831, the first official commission concluded the reality of magnetic phenomena. A new commission headed by Dubois d'Amiens, had returned to this conclusion.

This rejection pushes magnetism semi underground. Magnetism passionate educated people to the philosophical problems it poses for the half-day that brings on the physiology and psychology. They are writers, philosophers, lawyers, artists, who are interested in the phenomenon.

Alexis Didier was born into a working class family, he acquired a reputation of being a worker, writer, and dramatic actor, Alexis devoted himself to demonstrate his talents, because he wanted to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the existence and spirituality of the soul.

Alexis read in consciousness as we read in a book. This door remotely on a target that indicates him to bring accurate information. With an object belonging to a person, it tells the biography of this person. He practices medical diagnosis from a hair.

Skepticism is great however so we confronted him twice with Robert-Houdin, the famous magician. Robert-Houdin saw twice Alexis. Came originally to pin a crook, he was stunned and testified in writing that the phenomena produced by Alexis does not fall within the magic.

Some important experiments Alexis went to England several times for a series of demonstration data, the high society of the time showing a keen interest in the paranormal.

As an example, we can quote at length a case that is reported to us by an English aristocrat, the Reverend Chauncy Hare Townshend. Thus Townshend tells her with Alexis says Didier.

Once Marcillet was gone, I started to test the vision of Alexis, as regards the vision of distant places. I asked him if he wanted to visit my home in thought. He told me once: "!. Which Because you have two you have a home in London and another in the countryside By which do you want me to start?" I replied, "the house of campaign. " After a pause, Alexis said: "I'm here!". Then, to my surprise, he opened wide his eyes, and brought around him a stare. [...] "I see, he said, a house of average size. This is a house, not a castle. There is a garden around. On the left side there is a house small, on the property. " [...] "Now, I said to Alexis, what landscape you see?" - Water, water, he replied hastily, as if seeing the lake, which in effect , spreads under my windows. Then: "There are trees in front close to home." It was all right. "Well, I said, we will enter the living room. What do you see?" He looked around him, and he said (when I do not remember the exact words, I give them in English): "You have many paintings on the walls [...] One is the Sea. the other is a religious subject [...] It aya three people on the table -..? an old man, a woman and a child Is that the woman would be the Virgin Mary (He was interrogated aloud, as if thinking.) No, she is too old. He continued in this way, answering his own questions, while I remained completely silent.'s wife has a book on her lap, and child watch with his fingers something that is in the book! There is a stopper in the corner. Indeed, the painting depicts Saint Anne now learning to read to the Virgin Mary, and all the details of the scene were correct. [...] "

Literary posterity Alexis Didier is one of those who inspired the fantastic works of Balzac, Louis Lambert and Seraphita. The historian Fabrice BOUTHILLON written about:

The occult background of the human comedy is more to discover (consider only Seraphita or La Peau de chagrin, but the great Balzac's work includes at least two magnetic novels, Louis Lambert and Ursula Mirouet. The psychological and sociological profile of Louis Lambert is that of Alexis Didier, divining powers vested in it are exactly hers. Mirouet In Ursula, a psychic describes Dr. Minoret the house where the practitioner precisely lives in the mode where the Alexis was also lucid and other sleepwalkers (Leonid Pigeaire, Miss Fontanarosa) ".

Alexis Didier, “the most amazing clairvoyant in modern times” In April 1784, marquis de Puysegur, a french aristocrat and an officer of high rank in the royal army, was magnetizing a young man according to the principles of Mesmer’s “animal magnetism” when he triggered quite unwillingly a new kind of trance which he called “magnetic sleep”, in which surfaced new psychic abilities such as clairvoyance. This discovery became a challenge for mainstream psychology and philosophy. It was assumed that magnetic sleep was “nothing but” a kind of erratic dream, and that the so-called “magnetic powers” were just an illusion induced by suggestion into the somnambulist’s mind. But further observations demonstrated that these psychic powers are probably real, and that, if magnetic sleep is a kind of dream, it is a dream endowed with special powers - a divinatory dream. In his paper, Bertrand Meheust will document the case of the celebrated somnambulist Alexis Didier (1826-1886), who disclosed the most striking clairvoyant abilities ever observed in France.

Bertrand Meheust, professor of philosophy, PhD in sociology, and member of IMI, gave a talk on the clairvoyant Alexis Didier at the "Dream of Insomnia Workshop" organized by the Fondazione Antonio Ratti in February 2012.

Alexis Didier (1826-1886)

Alexis Didier is in line with the "magnetic sleepwalkers," this term, forgotten today, described in the 19th century an altered state of consciousness through which the gifts of the sleepwalker manifested. Alexis Didier was the best known of these sleepwalking and his extraordinary gifts earned him a reputation that extended to all Europe. When he was in favorable condition to exercise his gifts, Alexis Didier was able to see blindfolded, he could move his mind in an unknown place and bring verifiable information, he was able to read minds or a closed book. Some skeptics suspected a trick and he was confronted by Robert Houdin, the most famous magicians of the time, one of whose specialties was to see through the deception. He met Alexis Didier twice and was unable to demonstrate that it was a hoax. Alexis Didier is still the most significant and most spectacular case in regard to the psychic and paranormal powers,
